Educational summer activities with kids: 7 tips and ideas for families
Summer vacation is here! This is the perfect time for kids to enjoy a well-deserved break while learning and having fun spending more time with their families. That’s why tekman wants to share some ideas for educational activities to do as a family this summer, from museum trips to craft workshops to do together at home. Let’s fill this summer with enriching experiences!
1. Educational outings: visit museums, aquariums, and nature parks
Make the most of your free time to visit places full of culture in your hometown or vacation spot. You’re sure to find museums, aquariums, educational farms, or a nature park nearby. These outings aren’t just fun; they’re also a great opportunity to learn about history, natural science, and the environment.
Bonus tip: Before you go, look up information about the place together to spark the kids’ curiosity.
2. Board games: chess, Scrabble, cards, and much more
Board games and card games have many benefits: they strengthen family bonds, help develop math, language, social, and emotional skills (we learn to win and to lose), and keep everyone entertained for hours. This summer, spend a few afternoons playing board games as a family! At tekman, we recommend classics like dominoes, Parcheesi, and chess… and others like Scrabble, Monopoly, and Pictionary, or puzzles.
Bonus tip: Create a trivia game adapted to the kids’ age and knowledge so they can take part and feel included.
3. Craft workshops: art and creativity
Crafts develop creativity and fine motor skills. This summer, you can set up craft workshops at home for the kids: drawings, collages, sculptures, origami, finger painting, an album of pressed leaves, printed T-shirts, jewelry, friendship bracelets… There are so many crafts to stimulate imagination and creativity!
Bonus tip: Make your crafts with recycled materials so kids also learn how important it is to take care of the environment.
4. Family book club: reading together and going on adventures
Build a love of reading by starting a family book club. Summer vacation is the best time to get it going! Choose books suited to your children’s age and interests and set a reading time for the whole family. You can all read the same book or each read a different one, and then share the stories. Books open doors to new worlds and strengthen reading comprehension. Plus, if children see the adults in their family reading, they’re much more likely to grow up enjoying reading.
Bonus tip: Choose comics and adventure, magic, and mystery books that excite the little ones. The point is to have fun, not to read out of obligation!
5. Sports and physical activity: swimming, dancing, walks
Vacation is for resting, but it’s important not to spend the whole summer lying on the couch. We know how essential physical activity is (for the whole family!), and summer is the ideal time to do it together and outdoors: going swimming at the pool or the beach, practicing fun dances, doing yoga, heading to the park to play ball or have a water balloon fight, going on a hike in the mountains, or even taking a walk in the city’s parks. There are lots of options!
Bonus tip: Use this time to take up a new hobby or sport together. Have you always wanted to learn to skate or play pickleball? Do it with your kids!
6. Cooking as a family: math, science, and nutrition
Cooking is an everyday, educational activity, a very easy and fun way to apply math (working with quantities, measurement, etc.) and science (the temperature at which water boils, dissolving, etc.). Plus, by involving kids in the kitchen with simple recipes, we create the perfect space to learn about food and nutrition, raise awareness about household chores, and strengthen our bond with them. The icing on the cake is seeing the results of their work: a dish or dessert to enjoy together.
Bonus tip: To motivate the little ones, choose one of their favorite dishes. They’ll love making it!
7. A light study routine
During vacation, it’s a good idea to set aside some time for the summer homework assigned by the school, or for a workbook of your choice to review what they learned during the school year. If you set this light study routine from the start of the summer, kids will work through the activities at a relaxed pace and won’t have a pile left at the end of the vacation.
Bonus tip: At tekman, we recommend the Polo de limón summer workbook, a fun way to keep minds fresh this vacation. Here’s more about it!
