EMAT comes to Secondary: a new competency-based math program

EMAT comes to Secondary to transform the way students learn and experience math. This new program not only helps students understand concepts and procedures in an integrated way, but also guides them in discovering meaningful connections.

Through carefully designed and sequenced activities, EMAT builds a culture of thinking, developing logical reasoning and argumentation. Beyond learning math, students apply what they know in real-world contexts, solving problems and generating new ideas.

The math you know, like never before

EMAT for Secondary keeps the academic rigor that characterizes traditional math, but combines it with a competency-based approach that connects learning to real situations that matter to students.

Some of the program’s key features are:

  • Competency-based learning: Activities are designed to develop critical and creative skills. Students don’t just solve math problems; they also learn to apply them in authentic, everyday contexts.
  • Personalized learning: With multilevel exercises, problems presented both verbally and visually, and a wide variety of activities, EMAT supports students’ different learning paces and needs.
  • Metacognition: The program includes activities that encourage students to reflect on mathematical processes, helping them understand how they learn and how they can improve.
  • Formative assessment: Tools to diagnose student progress, identify areas for improvement, and prepare students for tests such as PISA.

How is EMAT structured in Secondary?

EMAT Secondary is designed to offer a clear, structured learning experience. It follows a logical, progressive sequence that makes it easier to understand and apply mathematical concepts.

Mathematical strands and essential knowledge

The program is organized around mathematical strands and essential knowledge, which group key concepts into learning micro-units. This structure helps students not only learn the content but also understand how it connects, building an integrated view of math.

Types of activities

EMAT includes a wide variety of activities to ensure meaningful learning. The micro-unit blocks share the same structure: they open with a challenge, continue with thinking routines and strategies, hands-on activities, exercises, and problems, and close by solving the initial challenge:

  • Routines and strategies: Opening challenges and activities to spark curiosity and activate prior knowledge.
  • Exercises and problems: Leveled tasks that combine practice exercises with experimental approaches.
  • Playful, interactive activities: They include references to digital resources, making learning an engaging and enriching experience.
  • PISA practice: Activities that prepare students for the PISA tests, so they perform well on these standardized tests.
  • Consolidation and organization: Mind maps, concept maps, and infographics summarizing what students have learned.
  • Learning situations: Contextualized activities that develop key competencies and connect math to real life by solving the initial challenge.

EMAT materials for Secondary

Not long ago, tekman Education launched a discussion on the use of screens in the classroom, and the message was clear: 72.1% of teachers prefer a hybrid program with print materials, which support structured teaching, and digital resources, which enhance interactive, personalized learning. With this in mind, we created EMAT for Secondary, which brings together the best of both worlds to meet the needs of today’s classrooms:

  • Activity book: The program’s core material, with exercises, challenges, and practical problems that let students put their knowledge into practice and develop key competencies. The Activity book also refers students to explanations in the Reference book and to resources on the digital platform.

  • Reference book: A reference tool that combines clear explanations with key concepts in outline form, worked examples, and study techniques. It is designed to complement classroom activities and support students’ independent learning.
  • tekman digital: A platform offering a range of digital resources: interactive activities, auto-graded exercises, virtual lessons, and multimedia materials to enrich the learning experience. Teachers will also find planning and assessment tools.
EMAT ESO recursos digitales
  • myroom: A digital classroom manager with planning and assessment tools for teachers.
